Learning Today for Tomorrow

Class 6

Welcome to Year 6!  The class is taught by Mrs Farr and supported by Mrs Haffenden, our HLTA. We have an exciting time in Year 6 as we busily prepare for our SATs and transition to Secondary school, with memorable leavers celebrations.  Over the year, we go on local trips, for example to Dover Castle, a Residential in June and some great opportunities to attend community days at Tonbridge School. Our topics over the year are Geography, History or Science based and the children are involved in developing questions to investigate. We study the impact of World War Two on Kent; understand how ancient civilisations have shaped the way we live today; study evolution and inheritance; investigate adaptation and design experiments to further understand electricity.

What a wet and windy start to our second day! Some activities had to be changed as it was unsafe to abseil in such strong winds - but we still had lots of fun. We have completed assault courses, been on a sensory trail, learned how to fence, been canoeing and built more rafts! We got very wet and cold, but happy to say we are now warm and dry, and enjoyed a delicious dinner. Tomorrow is bound to be exciting with abseiling and the Trapeze!

We arrived safely and have already had a busy afternoon. We have been on teh zip-wire, canoeing and fencing. The children are certainly representing themselves and the school brilliantly - we have alreasy received some lovely comments about them. I am so impressed with the way they have cared for each other too - the encouragement, support and understanding has been lovely. Some children have already overcome big obstacles and are incredibly proud of themselves - as are we. Dinner was fantastic, lots of choice and opportunities to revisit the salad bar as often as they liked.

They have settled into their rooms well, unpacking and eating as much of their snacks as physically possible! They are currently at a very soggy camp fire, and I know they are looknig forward to a busy day tomorrow.

Dear Year 6 students

Well done!  Mrs Haffenden and I are so proud of your hard work and resilience last week. You approached each test with determination and commitment, and we know you tried your absolute best.

We saw some even more pleasing qualities though, the way you looked out for and supported each other. We heard lots of you give encouragement and praise, boosting each other’s confidence.  You truly are a fantastic class.

We have a busy time ahead with some exciting events and work to do. Our work focus is going to be on Government. We will investigate the upcoming election, political parties, how the government works and why we have one. We will then use what we have learned to create our own parties and have an election to form a government. We will obviously need to understand what a society needs in regards to services, laws and money. It will help to create our own manifestos and have our own elections. To complement this, we will be learning more about the geography of the United Kingdom too. In maths, we are going to be focusing on maths skills to help you transition to KS3. We will develop our investigative skills, visualisation, experimentation, conjecture and the use of patterns.

There are some key dates for your diary too:

·         From 22nd May Secondary Schools will be visiting you
